Description

The 2014 Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG is a deeply commanding and internationally acclaimed Italian red wine that stands as a modern benchmark for the appellation. Crafted from a traditional blend of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Oseleta grapes, the fruit undergoes a meticulous 120-day appassimento (air-drying) process, losing up to 45% of its original weight to dramatically concentrate its sugars and structural components. On the nose, this deeply colored ruby-red wine unravels an extraordinary bouquet loaded with ripe black cherries, macerated damson plums, and dried violets. These primary aromas are beautifully underscored by developing tertiary layers of dark chocolate, roasted espresso beans, cloves, and sweet tobacco. On the palate, it delivers a massive, full-bodied presence that takes the senses by surprise with its unexpected softness and structural balance. A luxurious, velvety wave of baked dark fruits, fig cake, and cassis liqueur coats the mouth, effortlessly carrying its robust 15.5% alcohol content. Extensive maturation for 18 months in new oak barriques, followed by large traditional casks and significant bottle aging, has integrated the wood smoothly, yielding gummy, silky-smooth tannins. The wine maintains an injection of vibrant, mineral-backed acidity that keeps it fresh, culminating in an incredibly long, warming finish accented by lingering nuances of mocha, spice, and smoky tobacco. The Valpolicella Classico zone, located in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy, is defined by its dramatic hillside topography and mineral-dense limestone-marl soils that grant intense aromatic complexity to native varietals. The 2014 vintage presented an incredibly challenging, unusually cool, and rain-heavy growing season across northern Italy, forcing top-tier producers to be drastically selective with their fruit. For Allegrini, this resulted in a lighter, more ethereal, and elegantly restrained Amarone compared to hotter, muscle-bound years. While it possesses a touch less extraction than standard vintages, its brilliant natural acidity and focused structural definition have given it superb elegance and a beautiful drinking window that easily stretches through 2030.
